Danes I've known then are now gray on their noses. And, it's been almost a year since I've said goodbye to my best friend Bruiser. As it happened.. August 26th of 2009, I made the difficult choice to end his battle with DCM. Bruiser was just 6.

The great thing is he inspired me and continues to do so leaving his legacy. Now with a 3-year old Brindle named Koda, as well as, some first hand life experience to pay forward.

What I'm going to do with this blog moving onward is continue to share what I've lived, loved and learned about Great Danes.

Funny How Things Change

It's been quite some time since our last blog update and I've been meaning to chime in here and bring everybody up to speed on what's happened.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MFGQd8IBMRA/RypdazkrzCI/AAAAAAAAAAU/5u-834llS1k/s320/meandbru.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128013840816786466" />
For me it's been a full circle so to speak. As you can see, my inspiration for aaGD.com is doing well. That's Bruiser & I in a pic snapped just a few weeks ago. For some odd reason he looks small to me!

Now into my 40's I've been separated for over a year and actually live in the same apartment I had when I was 18-years old. Talk about full circle, my life is always throwing me curves but I wouldn't live it any other way.

My Bruiser suffered GDV (bloat with torsion) last May and thankfully he made it through with no major set backs. Also, we were fortunate to home our new Dane Koda this spring. It's awesome to see that incredible Dane energy again, Zoom, Zoom!

Considering all the personal problems on my plate the past year all-about-great-danes.com is shooting for stars. Now with over 2000 visitors a day I was finally able to shut down my old business of 15-years and concentrate on doing what I love.

Our new discussion forum has grown a community of nearly 500 friendly members.

New commercial machines have been aquired to fabricate our Alpenhitze Polartec coats with orders being filled world wide. It's awesome to know that our one of a kind jackets are keeping dogs warm all over the globe. Even Chihuahuas!

Our newly launched 32-inch elevated feeder has received rave reviews and we have many new products in development.

Recently, our discussion forum Administrator and I attended the 2007 Great Dane Nationals in Lancaster, PA. We will be adding many photos to our discussion forum in the near future. It was awesome to see so many gorgeous Danes in the same place at once. Next years event is in Kentucky, hope you will all drop by and say hello!

Anyhow, I guess that's all for now.

Just wanted to say hello and update this place, can't believe how time flies and things change.

Woof!

Jeff Z., Bruiser, Koda & the aaGD.com gang

Winter Dog Coats Now For All Breeds

Great news!

By popular demand, we are now offering our Great Dane, Alpenhitze winter dog coats for all size breeds!

New photos of a Chihuahua & Mini Pin will be added to the site shortly! Of course, we chose some of the smallest breeds for models as the absolute contrast in size compared to a Dane is simply amazing.

Eventually we will have 15 or so set sizes to choose from. For the time being, you'll need to measure up your dog and enter the dimensions in the drop down menus, we'll handle the rest :)

From Danes to Chihuahuas, we've got the absolute best quality coat for nasty winter weather! If you don't find sizes small enough for your dog in the drop down menus on the order page, check back shortly. Editing is currently in progress and should be finished up shortly.

Here is a direct link to our Alpenhitze dog coats. We have tried to do sign language but we ran out of signs that he would understand and when he is outside we cannot seem to get his attention because of distractions. What do you think we should do?

Answer: Training a deaf dog can be tricky. We would recommend a vibrating collar, NOT a shock, or E-collar unless hard corrections are neccessary. Chose a training style, either correction reinforcement, or clicker/reward and review our training articles. While reading, substitute the clicker, or collar correction, with a command using the vibration collar. Keep in mind, depending on how you set the intensity of the vibration, the collar can either simulate a click, or a correction.

This should work well, good luck with your training, be patient and persistent and you will be O.K. :)

Child Attacked by Family's Great Dane?

I came across this disturbing article while viewing our news feeds for site updates, for me, this is very upsetting.

Common people, the child was growling and rough housing with the Great Dane! I have a question about my own dog's behavior which now worries me. She is an 8-year old Great Dane with impeccable manners, extremely gentle and dainty and friendly and soft. Everyone falls in love with her - she s a sweetheart.

Children, throngs of people may approach her and she will simply stay still while they pet her, sniffing the air patiently. She has never shown teeth to other animals or people, never growled or snarled or shown any aggressive tendencies whatsoever. She is the local dog park's sweetie, yet today out of nowhere she lunged at a poodle and started biting (the poodle was leashed and she, off leash). I quickly separated the two and to my horror and shame she lunged once again to get another bite. Once the poodle's owner left the park, grumbling under her breath about how I should control my dog, I stood there many minutes in amazement, unsure of how to discipline Guess, as there has never been a need for it.

As I made my way home I wondered if it was a one time thing, a freak occurrence. But as I held the door open for her to enter our home, she heard or saw another dog a few yards away, and instead of stepping indoors as is her habit, darted her ears forward and began running towards the other dog in a way that worried me, so that I caught up and intervened as she chased the poor pup with the obvious intention of biting again. This ruled out my earlier theory that she might simply have felt threatened somehow by the poodle, as she sought out the second dog herself, though she was almost at our doorstep.

This is a dog on whose back you could place a hamster or a cat without her showing any aggression, who played gently with dogs 20 times smaller than she, who has consistently been exposed to scores of other dogs of all types since she was a puppy, and who is so tame in every respect that I am floored at her actions, and curious as to your take on what possibly could trigger this. Even when being offered treats she always sniffs it first, then slowly takes it into her mouth despite her being excited about the treat. She never disobeys me, always comes when I call, even when loose in the park and playing with other dogs. But today as she chased dog #2 and I tried blocking her from behind by placing an open umbrella in front of her (I was struggling to catch up), nothing could deter her.

I would so appreciate an expert opinion on the possible cause of such behavior, as I am boggled and a little upset by it. She does sleep on the couch or bed typically, but will obediently remain on the floor all night (on a blanket of course) if I ask her to. I m just mentioning this so you will get a clearer understanding of the situation. She has also almost constantly lived with other dogs...But a few days ago she snapped at my boyfriend's great Dane, a younger dog who's been her almost constant companion for a year, out of nowhere and seemingly for no reason. In the last 4 months she has been developing hip problems, and has more difficulty getting onto the couch or into a car. These are of course signs of aging, and I fear she might also be delusional now (is that possible?), which might explain her new defensiveness. At such a late age, can anything be done to help this?

ANSWER: So sorry to hear of your Dane's sudden change of behavior.

Please keep in mind, although we are familiar with dog behavior and training, we do not claim to be experts. That said, there are many reasons for canine aggression and behavioral changes.

It is clear by your note that you definitely socialized your girl well and at her age, I don't think it's an alpha dog issue, or territorial/fear/dog based aggression. These type of aggressions usually begin during puppy hood and fully manifest through the teenage years, 1 to 3-years old.

I would lean more towards the hip problems. A dog that is in pain may exhibit some changes in activity, temperament and behavior. After all, she doesn't feel well, she may feel angry, frustrated, confused, or a similar new found emotion.

Dog behavior is quite complex, this is just a thought. We have met many older dogs with HD that have shown similar aggressive episodes out in public.

You can try to teach her the "watch" command. This will not cure the behavioral problem but will help you two when out in public.

Start when walking on lead, ask her to watch, or look at you. When she looks at you, reward her with her favorite treats and BIG praises. If you command her to "watch" you whenever you come across other people and/or dogs, she will be conditioned to "watch" rather than focusing and mentally locking on to the other strangers.

Older aged dogs are a little harder to train but they are trainable. Quite often, redirection can prevent confrontation. By training your girl to focus on you and becoming calm and submissive, she may eventually forget the aggressive behavior all together.

You may consider a prong collar, believe it or not, they are quite humane. A soft correction on a prong collar gently pinches the dog's neck and will not harm her. If all else fails, i.e. treats and redirection, this method condition your girl to behave and avoid a correction.

Hope we were able to give you a few ideas, best of luck with your girl.

Great Dane Videos & TV Commercials

As promised, we've published a bunch of Great Dane video clips back at the site. I know he is arthritic by how he moves around and by how hard it is for him to get up and down. I would also like to give him maybe some Omega 3 salmon oil tablets to see if that would help. He has been with us about 2 months and in that time he is more active. We have two other dogs, both are young and love to play and gradually he has started to be more active with them, but I still notice the limp now and then and his stiffness when getting up and down. What do you think? I will probably take him to the Vet, he went just before we got him, but his arthritis was not addressed . He's a great new member to our family and we all love him. He is just a great big lovable gentle soul. Any advice would be so appreciated.

Thank you,

ANSWER:
Hello, our thoughts are with you and *****, we hope he's doing better today.

Please note, this is advice, we are not Veterinarians, how you supplement your Dane's diet is totally up to you:)

Helpful supplements for Arthritic Danes are:

1.
Regular strength BUFFERED ASPIRIN for pain, it is also a good anti inflammatory. Typically 5-mg to 10-mg per pound of body weight every 12 hours. I would advise to start with the lower amount 5-mg and see how that works.

Watch for any stomach upset! Side effects may include vomiting and diarrhea, if you see this stop administering the aspirin.

2.
SALMON OIL can help with inflammation and provides additional Omega's, follow the adult dosage if using a human grade product. Quality is key, high quality oils offered at pet suppliers can be quite pricey. Try to administer twice a day as close to 12 hours apart as you can.

Some feel that vitamin E helps a dog to absorb the salmon oil, you may want to research that further.

3.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate have been long recommended for joint health in dogs. This is not a "quick fix" however. It usually takes about 4 weeks before you will begin to see results. This is a joint maintenance program so to speak.

We have our big dogs on Cosequin DS and the little guys get regular strength. There are no problems just our "preventative maintenance program".

A 250-count bottle of DS (double strength) tablets should last about 4-months for your 170-pound Dane. Once you reach the maintenance level, after the first 4 weeks, a 250-count bottle will last 4.5 months.

There are many joint health product available similar to Cosequin, we can't confirm their performance however.

Another option, human grade forms of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate can be given at the adult dosage. They are much cheaper as found at Wal-mart and other retailers, we can't confirm their performance however.

Yucca is also known to help with joints, arthritis and inflammation, I have read many articles on success with older dogs.

Vitamin C is also used by many Dane owners for overall health, many claim it also helps puppies cropped ears to stand.

Thanks for writing, for additional information on dog medicines see our quick reference lists.

Great Dane Dog Questions and Answers

Over the past year we have answered nearly 1,000 Great Dane related questions sent in by site visitors via e-mail. We thought it would be a great idea to start a Q & A series here at our Blog. Questions range from health, nutrition, training, behavior, to basic Great Dane questions that may at times seem simple. Of course, names have been either omitted, or changed to respect the privacy of our visitors.

Question:

I'm thinking about getting a Great Dane are they expensive to keep?..and do they get sick often?

Answer:

Great Danes are more expensive to care for than smaller dogs, of course they eat more and require more vaccines and associated Veterinary medicines due to their weight. As far as food costs, 30 to 60-dollars per month is a safe estimate. This will vary and depends on the diet you choose, i.e., commercial foods, premium natural, or raw/b.a.r.f.

Health all depends on the pups lineage as well as where you purchase your dog. Buying from a pet store? not recommended. Find a good breeder, meet their dogs, inquire about their past litters and call some of the owners. Do your homework and you will increase your odds for a healthy dog, many live long lives, over 10-years. On the contrary, some unfortunate folks who purchase a poor quality puppy may be faced with years of medical problems, large veterinary expenses, and heart break.

Big New England Area Dog Show This April

The West Springfield Kennel Club's semi annual dog show is coming this April to the Big E Fairgrounds in Massachusetts! About an hour or so after returning, I was shocked to find a Tic crawling on my arm!

Guess it's that time of year again, luckily we know of a great site in Australia for flea & tic meds. The packaging in non-US but the products are the same. The nice thing is you don't need an RX for anything, you'll save some cash as well!

Our yearly purchase of Revolution "teal" cost about half if purchased here in the states. We treat for 6-months and use 2 "teal" tubes per application. In addition to the Revolution, Bruiser wears a Preventic collar, they're very cheap at this site but we found the collars available in the US last longer. Too bad they don't come in black:)

Stop by the site for the link and save some money. The three top companies are now listed at the site, along with important information about choosing a pet insurance plan for your dog.

Many resources were used to fully evaluate different providers, if you don't find a certain company listed, there is a reason for it. Feedback was key, we spoke with many dog lovers both in person, and on line forums. As well as directly with the insurance companies themselves.

The most important thing to understand when choosing a pet health insurance plan is "terms and conditions". Every plan has to be underwritten, things like "hereditary/congenital", "pre existing", "usual & customary", should all be made clear before you choose a provider.

Lets look at bloat for instance. Certainly bloat can be considered "congenital", yet if caused by a foreign object ingestion that blocks the passage to the intestine, it is now classified as "accidental". This is how it was explained to us by a friendly agent at one of the companies we reviewed.

Bottom line, if you start your dog early as a puppy, read, discuss, and fully understand the policy terms and verbiage, you will have peace of mind knowing a major medical tragedy won't run you broke. When caring for Great Danes, health insurance is a wonderful option. Just ask the kind lady we met last Fall who was out over 5-thousand dollars due to ACL tears with her elder, slightly over weight Springer Spaniel.

Awesome Jackets for Great Danes

I know it's been a long time coming, more than a year of planning as a matter of fact. As it goes, we tend to grow accustomed to their size as they grow, I swear our Dane doesn't seem big to me!

Truth is, most people including dog lovers can be quite intimidated by a large, or giant breed dog. After all, big dogs are not for everyone, a large percentage of dog owners prefer small, or medium sized companions.

Ever here a grown man scream?

One afternoon while walking our Dane in public we approached a middle age man that was unaware we were coming up along side. The poor guy caught a glimpse of our giant breed dog and let out a scream you wouldn't believe! Feeling sorry for the man we apologized then realized, we did nothing wrong! Unbelievably, the sudden unexpected appearance of our Great Dane was a shock in itself.

Further bias towards big dogs was evident one afternoon at our local lumber store. Previously witnessing smaller dogs being whisked around in shopping carts, we figured it would be fine to let our Great Dane come along and join the activities. Standing calmly on lead with my daughter, our dog was behaving perfectly. I began to load up the lumber needed for my Saturday afternoon project. Suddenly, we were interrupted by what looked like the entire store security staff! Being told there are no dogs allowed I quickly pointed at a Poodle in a cart further down the isle. After quarreling a bit, we were told, "he's to big" and swiftly escorted out the front doors.

Most large dog owners can attest, a giant breed dog like a Great Dane is no more a threat than an ankle biting Chihuahua! More often than not, they are truly gentle soles that want nothing more than to be around people. Unfortunately, their size and appearance is too often fearsome to the average person. Large dog owners often forget the true size and stature of their dogs. Remember, many strangers will panic if your giant companion rushes towards the curb to say hello.

Asking in advance, or announcing your visit, will help avoid unforeseen and unexpected conflicts of the dog vs. human variety.

Owning a giant breed dog requires proper training and socialization techniques. Special attention should be focused on interaction and behavior around people as well as other animals.

For additional information on training and socializing a giant breed dog, visit "training Great Danes" as brought to you by all-about-great-danes.com

Canine Myotherapy and Common Dog Illnesses - The Benefits of Canine Muscle Therapy

Canine Myotherapy is a muscle therapy technique used to treat painful canine health issues and other dog illnesses. Trained hands of a Canine Myotherapist can increase the quality of life for a sick, or ailing dog.

It's a known fact that most dogs take on the personality of their owners. Just as our dogs learn by our body language and actions, we can also learn from theirs. Ever notice how your dog seems to know when you're sick?

As our dogs age, certain ailments, health problems, and dog illnesses may manifest. A change in gait, activity, energy, or appetite are all signs of a potential underlying health issues. Maybe you noticed she just seems stiff lately, has a harder time with stairs, or takes longer to get up from bed.

Although orthopediec problems are often the cause of such symptoms, muscular dysfunction may also be the culprit. In any case, myotherapy can be helpful to prevent and resolve the pain associated with a variety of dog illnesses and other health issues.

Initially, a certified Myotherapist will apply gentle pressure along your dog's muscle edges, finding and releasing trigger points, or "knots" as they are also known. These knots can be very painful to your dog, limit muscle range of motion, and cause her to adjust her gait or body positions to compensate for the pain. If left untreated, these compensations in posture made by your dog can lead to other painful problems.

By releasing these trigger points, and stretching each muscle group through their full range of motion, the Myotherapist stimulates endorphins and improves blood flow to the area. While the endorphins act as a natural pain killer, the increased blood flow helps to flush the muscles of lactic acid. The end result is a dog in less pain with increased flexibility who of course, is much happier.

Canine myotherapy is often used for issues such as poor gait, stiffness, lameness, lethargy, roached back, poor flexibility, limping, arthritis, cow hocks, Lyme disease stiffness, as well as many other similar canine ailments.

The number of sessions and length of treatment will vary for each individual dog and is based on the severity of its condition. Your Myotherapist will make an analysis during your initial visit. Once treatment begins, you may notice an increase in the need for water, increased sleep, and increased stretching. These reactions should resolve shortly and are a result of your dog's body recovering and healing.

Most likely you will be sent home with an exercise program to implement at regular intervals. This assures that the level of muscular health achieved by the canine myotherapy sessions is maintained.

If your dog shows symptoms of muscular dysfunction, or other health issues, consider a visit to a Canine Myotherapist. You will be rewarded with a more energetic, alert, and agile companion.

Additional information on dog illnesses affecting large breed dogs, including those that may be treated with Canine Myotherapy, visit all-about-great-danes.com

Adopting a Great Dane

For those of you looking for a Great Dane, have you considered adopting? Yea it's all good when there is a soft cushion of snow dampening the powerful strides of a charging Great Dane. And the endless supply of white snow cones for our dogs to enjoy is quite a treat. Not to mention the quality time playing snow shovel.

Watching our Danes play and let it all hang out in a fresh blanket of winter white always puts a giant grin on our faces.

It's all good!

So what's so bad about winter?

A hard coating of freezing rain!

Talk about putting an end to our outdoor activities!

All was well until last weeks icy mix that basically transformed our energetic Danes into precocious, slow, unsteady, clumsy creatures. On goes the problem with winter in these parts. All to often we are doused with a healthy dose of freezing rain, or "wintry mix" as it's often called on the evening news.

What to do?

This stuff is treacherous to all dogs! Sure the shorter, more sure footed mutts are more adept to navigating the frozen landscape. Unfortunately, our tall, heavy giants have a difficult time and slip, slide, get stuck, fall, and succumb to numerous ice related injuries. Of course there are the doggy boots, although I have never met a dog who would keep all four of them on.

Fortunately, our boys catch on quickly! It typically takes one "Dane wreck" during the first squirrel chase after an ice storm and they realize it's time to slow down. Guess we'll just wait for that next storm of the powdered variety to cover up the icy mess.

Until then, beware of ice!

Site Updates, News and Happenings.

Hello again it's been about a month since our last post and we appologize. We were quite busy during October with site updates, e-mail replies, and offline site related to-do's. That confessed, we hope all is well with you, your family and fur-kids.

Here's whats been going on.

There are many new friends added to our Photo Gallery, thank you all for sending in such great photos and information.

Adding products for purchase was not our original site plan however some of you asked and others commented on the difficulty of finding Dane size clothes. We had to overcome a few hurdles and are making progress. The first issue was we were not set-up for e-commerce, we needed a way for you to check-out. Luckily, I have sold on e-bay since 1999 (with 100% pos. feedback:) and had a PayPal account already in place. Low and behold, PayPal has a shopping cart that allows you to purchase and check-out on their secure HTTPS server, and you don't even need to have a PayPal account. If and when needed, we may upgrade to a true e-commerce solution.

The second issue was finding manufacturers and distributors that would sell to us at wholesale or below. After all, why put up products that are not a bargain? Here is an example, check out our price on K9 Top Coat body suits. These are the kind of products and bargains we are looking for. Finding deals like this requires a little phone work and persuasion as we don't currently meet the wholesale requirements for many vendors.

This brings up another topic of interest. We have featured two vendors that have awesome products we actually own. Dog jackets by Chilly Dogs, and dog wetsuits by Otter Bay. We offer a link to these vendors via a form and some of you asked why. The form allows us to record the traffic we send to these companies. After six months or so, we will use this information to inquire about sales and hopefully get approved for wholesale.

As new Dane appropriate products are found we will add them to our Dane Apparel page. Foal style blankets are our next target however the wholesale issue still remains a problem. We are also working with a designer on a line of custom jackets and clothing based on big Bruiser's measurments. The initial prototypes are awesome, hopefully costs will be in-line and we can move forward with production.

We took the advice of a fellow web master and finally added the required legal information such as our Privacy Policy and Statement. Also added are Terms and Conditions that are linked to all product sales pages.

In the works...

Dane proof toys, reviews and ratings - National Dane Rescue organization listing - More details on dog food including ingredient tables of a dozen or so of the top brand kibble for Danes - Dane breeder listing - Dane grooming tips.

In progress but slow...

National list of off-leash places to run.

Thats all for now, feel free to write with any site suggestions or comments.

Have a Great Day(n)!

J, B, &
